4-star Big Man with ‘Cuse offering cuts down the list of competitors

One of the top power forwards in the class of 2024, Washington, D.C.’s Donnie Freeman knocked Syracuse basketball out of the running in its recruitment.

The 6-foot-9 Freeman, a consensus top 60 prospect in the junior cycle, said on Twitter that his five remaining finalists were Big Ten Conference members Rutgers, Maryland and Iowa, LSU of the Southeastern Conference and Texas of Big are 12 conference.

First and foremost, we wish Freeman all the success in the world as he progresses through his high school career and then through the collegiate ranks.

Second, it’s not that surprising that Freeman didn’t include the orange in his top 5. While the ‘Cuse reportedly recruited him hard for a time, Syracuse basketball has received little, if any, mention lately when the four-star Freeman spoke about his recruiting process.

Syracuse basketball is out of the running for big four-star man Donnie Freeman of 2024.

Around the time he announced his top five, multiple media reports suggested that Freeman could make a signing decision sometime in December.

Freeman is a junior standout at St. John’s College High School in DC. In grassroots basketball, he plays for Washington-based team Takeover in Nike’s EYBL league. The Syracuse basketball coaches, by the way, are very familiar with the Team Takeover program.

While attending Orange’s annual Elite Camp in August 2021, Freeman accepted a scholarship offer from the ‘Cuse. That was the first offer from the Syracuse junior basketball coaches.

Reports indicated that the Orange was prioritizing Freeman for a time in the 2024 cycle. He even said several times that he planned to pay an official visit to the hill, but that never happened.

He has made unofficial visits to Rutgers and Maryland, and official visits to Iowa and Texas. He recently told Jake Weingarten, founder of Stockrisers.com, that he may also make an official visit to LSU.

In addition to Syracuse basketball, his full offering sheet included LSU, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, Iowa, Texas, Rutgers, Marquette, Bryant, Ole Miss, VCU, Norfolk State, Alabama, Maryland, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Xavier, George Mason and Old domination.

Multiple recruiting services rank Freeman in the top 30 in his class, as well as a top 10 power forward and the No. 1 player in our nation’s capital.

Orange coaches have offered numerous other great men of 2024, including five-star Derik Queen, five-star Yves Missi and four-star Thomas Sorber.

More developments happened last month for the ‘Cuse with its 2024 recruitment efforts. Five-star point guard Elliot Cadeau put Syracuse basketball in the top six, while four-star guard Jalil Bethea, four-star shooting guard Elijah Moore and four-star wing Damarius Owens all made official visits to the Orange campus.
