Recruitment Spotlight: Alabama 2022 State Championship Games

Cold weather won’t slow down the intense action on the Alabama suspense during the Super 7 State Football Championships. All brackets are locked for the title games, with big talent stepping onto the field for the Class of 2023 one last time in hopes of writing their names in the state’s history books.

4A Andalucia vs. Cherokee County

game date: 2 Dec

The sequence: Andalusia got sweet revenge for a regular-season loss (45-23) in the semifinals against Montgomery Catholic 29-26. As the frontrunner, Cherokee County has so far rolled through the playoffs with double-digit wins in all four competitions.

Andalusia: The Bulldogs ran a 13-1 record with a high-scoring offense (40 ppg) and a tight-fisted defense (15 ppg). The leading lead on defense is taken by three-star tackle Jaeden Jackson. Going up against the Warriors will be a highlight game for four-star tailback J’Marion Burnette if he’s healthy. Burnette is credited for 1,428 yards from 172 carries with 16 touchdowns in 10 games played this season and missed the Bulldogs’ final game. In the semifinal win, Dorian Crittenden went into beat mode, carrying the rock 45 times for 216 yards with two points. Another player to watch on offense is senior receiver Kaden Denson.

Cherokee County: The Warriors also had a terrific performance on the ground, with Jacob Cornejo rushing for 307 yards with two touchdowns from 29 deaths. The win for Cherokee County wiped out a Week 4 (17-14) loss to Oneonta.

5A Charles Henderson vs. Ramsey

game date: 1 Dec

The sequence: Ramsay survived Pleasant Grove and won 20-27 to advance. Charles Henderson drove to the state title game, beating Faith Academy 27-12.

Ramsey: The Rams’ offense is a balanced attack that produces 2,730 yards in the air and 2,440 yards on the ground. The leading leader for Ramsay is Junior Ashton Ashford. Ashford carried the load against Pleasant Grove with 203 yards and two TDs from 23 carries. Sophomore QB Kameron Keenan was on point last time out, completing 8 of 11 for 197 yards with a TD and an INT. Need a yard to walk behind three-star Vanderbilt conscript Anthony Miles is a really good option.

Charles Henderson: The Trojans’ offense trailed behind juniors Parker Adams, Jywon Boyd and Zach Coleman in their win over Faith Academy. Adams threw for 139 yards on a touchdown while Boyd and Coleman combined 108 yards on the ground with a trip to the end zone.

6A Saraland vs. Mountain Brook

game date: 2 Dec

The sequence: Saraland, two seeds, clawed and clawed their way to the championship game, surviving a third-round Test against Homewood (57-56) and then beating Theodore 21-6 to advance. Mountain Brook, also a runner-up, hit the playoffs with all cylinders and raged with all his might.

Saraland: The Spartans also avenged a regular-season loss (27-26), pushing Theodore past 21-6 the second time out. Santae McWilliams did a little of everything for his team, rushing 22 times for 126 yards on a score and collecting two passes for 14 yards to get into the end zone a second time. The loaded roster of underclassmen was stable on defense, led by junior Jamison Curtis with 10 tackles against Theodore.

mountain stream: The playoffs were a time for junior tailback Cole Gamble to shine. Gamble added three more rushing scores to his 17 in the playoffs against Muscle Shoals. The Spartans rock-fed the star jam 24 times and saw 193 yards produced on the ground.

7A Auburn vs. Thompson

game date: Nov 30

The sequence: After Dothan upset Foley 42-28 in the opening round, Auburn had a clear run into the semifinals before defeating Central 14-13 in a thriller. Thompson had an easier path to the title game, posting double-digit wins in all three games.

Maroon: Davis Harsin, son of former Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin, who is Auburn High School’s backup QB, will be on familiar territory for the championship game at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The engine powering the Tigers’ offense is four-star senior center Bradyn Joiner, an Auburn commit, and quarterback Clyde Pittman.

Thomas: Is a four peat in the works? Thompson has ruled Alabama’s 7A division and has the talent on both sides of the ball to win a fourth straight title. The defense is led by four-star players Peter Woods (Clemson) and Tony Mitchell (Alabama). On offense, three-star Michigan State lineman Stanton Ramil is a road grader. Underclassmen to watch for in the Warriors roster are defensive back Kaleb Harris and quarterback Zach Sims, and 2025 four-star defensive back Anquon Fegans.
