This is a comment from Charlie Russo, a Savannah resident and businessman and lifelong Georgia Bulldog fan.
I do not play. So the summer before college football started, I called my best buddy Denny to ask him to see what the odds were of Stetson Bennett winning the Heisman Trophy. Denny called me back quickly and told me it was 100 to 1. Wow! So I said we should deposit $1,000 with a chance of winning $100,000.
In my eyes it was a castle. Stetson was coming off a national championship and the upcoming season for the Georgia Bulldogs looked challenging but was doable with our talent. So we jumped on the Bennett train, and Denny and I paid $500 each.
So now comes the opening game against Oregon and we’re favored by 17 points; we win 49-3. And again we thought – wow! Stetson has a great game and now we think if we keep winning big Stetson is going to New York in December.
Stetson Bennett for Heisman?UGA footballer, Kirby Smart weigh in

Darnell Washington acts like Superman and does not jump over high buildings but high defenses. Wow! Brock Bowers is every quarterback’s dream – two of the most talented tight ends in the country. The coaches are the best on both sides of the ball – defensively and offensively. And offensive coordinator Todd Monken has never had so much talent to work with. The tools that Stetson has at their disposal are amazing.
Denny and I love the way Georgia and Stetson play and we lick our chops like Uga X waiting for his next meal. Now I wake up at 3am and wonder what I’m going to spend all that money on. I spoke to Stetson Bennett’s father, Stetson Bennett III, and told him I would meet him in New York, and I thought again, it’s a castle.
My son Charles and I find our tuxedos and fly to the Big Apple. We plan to leave New York to walk to Atlantic City and collect the winnings. We had no idea about politics and now I have so many questions:
- How could Stetson not be a shoo-in?
- Has any college football player done more for their team than Stetson? (Be honest.)
- If the Heisman is being awarded to the most outstanding college football player for the 2022 football season, why isn’t the voting taking place after all games have been played, rather than 85% of the season? (No sporting event is ever decided until the final whistle blows.)
Why not wait until after the title game?
If the voting happened after the national championship game, then we would have a real winner of the 2022 Heisman Trophy. If the finalists are tied, neck and neck, and one player has two great games and wins the national championship, that game would be my opinion the decision maker.
Wow, is all I can really say.

Now the season is over and the Bulldog Nation is excited. It’s another chapter in Stetson’s career – professional football. What a great story: Stratton Leopold roll the cameras for a film called UnderDAWG.
Stetson finished this year as the new leader in Georgia for passing yards in a single season. He broke Aaron Murray’s record a decade ago. Stetson’s 4.5 speed in a 40-yard dash, coupled with his 150 IQ and passing accuracy, is simply hard to beat.

I never thought anyone would overtake Herschel Walker, but here we are. Stetson would get the Falcons’ attention, not just because he had a successful season, but because he always filled the stands. And we look forward to 2024 when Brock Bowers heads to Atlanta – we’ll see a dynamic duo – here we go again!
And now, Denny, look up the odds of Stetson Bennett playing in the NFL…
