GEorgia voters took advantage of the reintroduced Saturday and Sunday elections in multiple counties across the state. Voters across Metro Atlanta reported waiting in long lines to cast their ballots in the race to decide who would represent Georgia in the Senate.
Senator Raphael Warnock meets Republican challenger Herschel Walker for the last time. The winner will serve a full six-year term in the Senate.
Almost 80,000 Georgians matched on Saturday although the Republican leadership is trying to deny voters the opportunity. Countless voters would not have been able to vote if Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr had gone their way.
Black Voters Matter co-founder and CEO Cliff Albright called the delay confusing. Despite being hailed as a “hero” who defended democracy after the 2020 election, Raffensperger disagreed with the determination of Saturday’s post-Thanksgiving vote, citing his interpretation of state law.
Given the shortened voting period, Saturday’s vote allowed college students to participate at home during the holidays before returning to school. Between sharing images of long lines on Saturday afternoon, Twitter users made sure groups had to sue to make Saturday’s vote possible.
Another Twitter user said she waited alongside her daughter for more than two hours to vote at the East Point Library in Fulton County, GA.
Warnock joined several voting rights groups to challenge the Foreign Secretary’s decision to limit voting on the Saturday ahead of the December 6 runoff. Ultimately, a Fulton County judge ruled that Saturday’s voting should be left to individual counties.
Attorney Marc Elias tweeted about the implications of the lawsuit to make Saturday’s vote available.
“We sued to ensure Georgia counties could offer voting today and won,” Elias tweeted. “Republicans have appealed to the conservative GA Supreme Court. We always won. Next time someone tells you that there is no point in fighting to protect voting rights, show them this video.”
ABC reporter Lalee Ibsa said that Warnock waited about an hour at an early voting location in Atlanta before casting his ballot. Some counties also offered Sunday voting. Rev Dr William Barber II joined Black Voters Matter in Columbus, GA for a Souls to the Polls early voting rally.
Early voting in all 159 boroughs begins Monday, November 28th and runs through Friday, December 2nd. The runoff period was cut significantly as the SB 202 was swayed by a big lie after Democrats won both Georgia Senate seats.
