Poll shows leaders in crucial showdown between Sen Warnock and Herschel Walker

With just two weeks to go before the much-anticipated Georgia Senate runoff, a new poll found Sen. Raphael Warnock by a slim margin over GOP opponent Herschel Walker.

An AARP poll of Georgia voters released Tuesday showed Warnock has a slight advantage over Walker, 51% to 47%.

Warnock has a strong 24-point lead among voters ages 18-49, while Walker is up nine percentage points among Georgia voters ages 50 and older.

According to the survey, 51% of respondents have a positive opinion of Warnock. Only 45% have a positive opinion of Walker, while more of the voters polled, 49%, have a negative opinion of the political newcomer.

The poll found that Georgia voters like former President Donald Trump more than current President Joe Biden. Just 43% of respondents approve of the job Biden currently holds as president, while Trump received a 48% job approval rating for his tenure in the White House.

About 16% of voters aged 50 and over said “threats to democracy” were the top issue in deciding their vote in the Senate runoff, with 16% ranking inflation and rising prices as the most important designated topics.

Social Security and Medicare were the top issues for 11% of respondents, while the economy and jobs were top for 10% when deciding their Senate vote.

Inflation was the top issue for 26% of Republican voters, while 29% of Democratic voters said “threats to democracy” were the most pressing issue in the runoff. Of all respondents, 63% said they were either very or somewhat concerned about their financial situation.

After Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto retained her Senate seat in Nevada, the Democratic Party was guaranteed a majority in the chamber. If Walker wins the Dec. 6 runoff, the Senate will be split 50-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris delivering the crucial Senate vote, while if Warnock claims victory, the Senate will be split, 51-49th and the Democrats will hold the absolute majority.

The AARP poll was conducted Nov. 11-17 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
