THE FLATS – Tech Redshirt senior defensive end ended after perhaps the most dominant performance by an Atlantic Coast Conference defenseman this season, contributing in Georgia Tech’s 21-17 win over 13-17 North Carolina last Saturday Keion white (Garner, NC/Garner HS/Old Dominion) was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
White first earned the honor due to his strength of three sacks, four tackles for losses and seven tackles overall in the Yellow Jackets’ win over the Tar Heels. White is the only ACC player and one of only eight NCAA Division I FBS players to record up to three sacks, four TFL and seven tackles in a game this season. He’s the first Yellow Jacket to accomplish that feat since current Los Angeles Charger Jeremiah Attaochu made it against Georgia in 2013.
To make White’s accomplishment even more impressive, she helped Georgia Tech beat one of the nation’s top offenses in North Carolina and their quarterback, Heisman Trophy nominee Drake Maye. Led by White, Tech Maye sacked six times and totaled 12 TFL as a team while keeping UNC at season lows for points (17), total offense (365 yards), and passing yards (202), which equaled 23 points, 140 total yards and 139 passing yards below the Tar Heels’ seasonal averages.
White and the Yellow Jackets (5-6, 4-4 ACC) end the regular season on Saturday when they travel to arch-rivals and leaders Georgia (11-0, 8-0 SEC). The kickoff for Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate is scheduled for noon at UGA’s Sanford Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
In a joint effort, Georgia Tech, the Georgia Tech Foundation, Georgia Tech Athletics and the Alexander-Tharpe Fund have joined forces to accelerate scholarship funding for students and athletes with the launch of the Competitive Drive Initiative. The initiative begins with the Accelerate GT Match Program, where every new donation to AT Fund’s Athletic Scholarship Fund made through December 31 is matched dollar for dollar by the Georgia Tech Foundation, up to $2.5 million . Should Accelerate GT reach its fundraising goal of $2.5 million, the gift would result in a $5 million impact to Georgia Tech Athletics.
