After two quarters of the game on Saturday, the Georgia Bulldogs found themselves in a slugfest with Georgia Tech. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs took advantage of two crucial mistakes by the Yellow Jackets to put the game out of reach.
Georgia conceded a bobbled snap from the Georgia Tech punter David Shanahan and a fumble from Yellow Jacket’s running back Jamie Felix Score 10 crucial points in the third quarter en route to a 37-14 win. The win was marked by ebbs and flows for the Bulldogs, who were trailing early and struggling on both sides of the ball before settling and silencing their state rival.
As a result of Saturday’s win, Georgia (12-0, 8-0 SEC) sealed two consecutive unbeaten regular seasons and earned its fifth straight win over Georgia Tech (5-7, 4-4 ACC).
“First, I want to thank our fans for coming out,” Kirby Smart said Saturday after the win. “You know, it’s a great atmosphere. I felt like there were some pauses in the game sometimes and I was sleepwalking. And that always scares you, and I think our fans kind of pushed us over the edge to get some momentum there in the game. Georgia Tech has given a lot of credit to their employees. The staff have changed and worked really hard this year putting the fixtures together and you can tell they’ve put a lot of work into it. They did a good job defensively and did a good job offensively with a game plan. I have great respect for the staff and the players, how the players fought in the game. I thought special teams got through today. And it’s the first game in a long time that we’ve done some games on special teams to kind of give us some momentum and get us rolling. I’m very proud of that. All in all, it goes to the next. A great regular season for this group. They did everything we asked him to do and they only get bigger from here.”
Georgia will now prepare to face LSU in the SEC Championship in Atlanta, with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET and CBS televising the conference title.
