The Eagles defeated rival Appalachian State 51-48 in double overtime to qualify for the Bowl. The Eagles join Louisiana, Southern Miss, Coastal Carolina, Marshall, South Alabama and Troy on the list of Sun Belt teams to achieve bowl eligibility this season. Bowl Games will announce their matchups on Sunday, December 4th. Georgia Southern will be playing in its fifth bowl game since joining the FBS in 2014. Despite winning the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2014, the Eagles were unable to play due to a bowl game until the transfer from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Eagles are 3-1 in bowl games, winning the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl, 2018 Camellia Bowl and 2020 New Orleans Bowl. Possible targets for the 2022 bowl include: Cure Bowl, Lending Tree Bowl, Camellia Bowl, New Orleans Bowl , Myrtle Beach Bowl, Boca Raton Bowl and the Independence Bowl. Georgia Southern is one of 79 bowl-eligible teams in the FBS after week 13 of the season. For an FBS team to be officially bowl-eligible, they must have at least six wins with a minimum win percentage of .500. A total of 82 teams are needed to fill all 41 bowl games. Teams can only count one win against an FCS opponent towards the total number of wins required for bowl eligibility. For the first time since 2016, at least a 5-7 team is needed to fill a bowl game due to a shortage of bowl-ready rosters.
