PREVIEW: IUP women end homestand against Ohio Dominican

IUP goes into action with a 3-0 mark after a stunning win in Rosemont on Education Day last week. The Crimson Hawks set several school records in the 102-20 win over the Falcons and were strong defensively all season under the freshman head coach Craig Carey.

Ohio Dominican scored a narrow 72-70 win over Maryville on Monday night (November 21). The Panthers go into the season 2-2 for freshman head coach Melanie Balcomb.



  • IUP rolled over Rosemont last week in front of a record turnout of 2,992 elementary school students. The 82-point winning margin was the second-largest in program history, while the five points allowed in the first half set a program record.
  • IUP held Lincoln to four points in the opening quarter and Rosemont to just two points in the opening stanza.
  • All 12 players currently in the roster came into the ratings column against Rosemont. hope cook (fifteen), Anna Rafferty (fifteen), Grace Spadaro (13) and Daniela Shaugnessy (13) all posted double-digit wins. Rafferty and Spadaro each recorded their first double-doubles of their college careers.
  • IUP leads the nation in field goal percent defense (21.9), defensive rebounds (39.0), and scoring defense (38.0) at the start of the season. Part of the strong defensive effort was an aggressive team approach, with IUP notching at least nine steals in two of the first three games of 2022-23.
  • The Crimson Hawks have gone 61-9 in home games since the start of the 2017-18 season.
  • Carey had the opportunity to work throughout the lineup at some point during the first three games of the non-conference season.
  • While defending against some poor-shooting opponents was nothing short of spectacular, IUP is also second in PSAC when it comes to offense (79.3).
  • The Crimson Hawks defeated Ohio Dominican 76-61 in Columbus last November. It marked a return for IUP to the site of the 2019 NCAA DII Elite Eight as Gina Adams scored her first career double-double behind 14 points and 11 rebounds.
  • The guard duo of Kiera Baughman (12.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 14 Ast, 7 Stl) and Maria Cerro (12.0 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 55.6 FG%) have been catalysts on the IUP offense this season, stepping into more prominent roles on the starting lineup.

  • Gabby Stare made her second 30-point appearance of the season earlier this week with 34 points in a 72-70 win over Maryville.
  • Stare went 6-of-7 from beyond the arc and posted a career-high six steals while leading the Panthers.
  • Maryville broke away late with an 11-2 run as the Panthers held onto the win.
  • Head Coach Melanie Balcomb is in her first season at the helm of the ODU women’s program, but has 24 years of experience as a head coach and a total of 37 years on the job. She has been on the coaching staff of South Carolina, Texas Tech, Purdue and others.
  • Balcomb was Xavier’s head coach for seven seasons from 1995 to 2002, spent 14 seasons as Vanderbilt’s head coach and amassed over 300 wins with the Commodores.
