On Friday, November 25, authorities in Bensalem, Pennsylvania arrested 16-year-old Joshua Cooper for murder after he allegedly posted a confession video to Instagram.
According to Fox News, Cooper reportedly showed a teenage girl a murder victim in an Instagram video chat. He is said to have asked for help disposing of the body. The girl’s parents then called authorities, who went to Cooper’s home at Top of the Ridge Trailer Park in Bensalem, where they discovered the body of a deceased girl. The suspect was arrested shortly thereafter.
Bensalem Police reported that as an adult, Joshua Cooper faces criminal homicide charges, possession of crime tools, and tampering with or falsifying physical evidence.
Joshua Cooper is said to have shot a minor
CNN reported that while the name of Cooper’s victim was not released, authorities determined that she was fatally shot in the bathroom of the suspect’s home.
ABC7 reported that authorities also confirmed that the victim is a minor. Speaking to the Courier Times, William McVey, Bensalem’s director of public safety, said the victim was a 13-year-old girl who was not from the city. McVey added that she also had no relationship with the suspect.
The case is still under investigation and Bensalem authorities have not yet released any possible motives for the murder.
Bensalem Police said 16-year-old Joshua Cooper tried to flee upon arriving at the scene before being arrested by authorities at Newport Mews Drive and Groton Drive. In a probable cause affidavit, officers reported that the teenager told them the young girl’s killing was an accident.
In a press release, Bensalem Police summarized the allegations made against the teenager. The explanation was:
“During the video chat, the 16-year-old said he had just killed someone. Then he flipped the video image and showed the legs and feet of a blood-covered person. He then asked for help disposing of the body.”
Authorities added that the teenager had already tried to cover up the crime.
The statement continued:
“There was also evidence that significant steps were being taken to clean up the crime scene.”
According to CBS, the murder shocked the community of Bensalem, a city of just 60,662 people about 200 miles from Philadelphia.
Top of the Ridge resident Charlie Petree spoke to CBS reporters about the crime. Petere said:
“I’ve seen the police in and out over the 30+ years, but it’s not like an everyday occurrence.”
ABC reported that Joshua Cooper is currently being held at the Edison Juvenile Detention Center. The teenager was denied bail at a preliminary hearing on Friday night. While the name of his attorney has not yet been released through online court filings, his arraignment is set for December 7.
