“He’s a kind hearted person,” Naomi Campbell told Dateline. “He’s fun to be with.”
Naomi’s son, 18-year-old Jay’ by Malik Bailey, has been missing since April 14, 2022.
“No one has heard of him,” Naomi said.
Naomi told Dateline that Jay’von grew up in Temperanceville, Virginia. “It’s the land – quite a lot of trees and more fields,” Naomi said. She told Dateline that Jay’von is one of four siblings. “He has an older brother, an older sister and a younger brother.”
Naomi told Dateline that Jay’von lived with her in Temperanceville. “He lived with me but when he disappeared he was visiting his father,” Naomi said. Jay’von’s parents are no longer together.
Naomi said Jay’von’s father lives in Painter, Virginia, about 30 minutes from Temperanceville. According to Naomi, Jayvon went to see him on Monday April 11th. “I last spoke to him on the evening of the 13th.”
Naomi told Dateline that she texted her son around 10:32 p.m. on April 13. “I was working and I was asking him what he was doing,” Naomi recalled. “He said he was ‘chilling,’ so I asked him if he was okay and he said yes.”
Naomi said after she got home from work around 2 a.m. the next morning, she began to suspect something might be wrong with her son. “When I got home from work, I called and texted him, but I didn’t get a reply,” she said, noting that they usually interacted when she got off work. She also said calls to Jay’von’s phone went straight to voicemail. “He usually answered,” Naomi said.
Naomi said she continued to call and text Jay’von for the rest of the day but received no reply. Then she received particularly alarming news from the mother of Jay’von’s 1-year-old daughter. “They communicated a lot,” Naomi said, but she also had trouble connecting with Jay’von. “Red flags were already raised, but that made it rise even more.”
Naomi told Dateline she then contacted Jay’von’s father. “I was told by his father that he was at his cousin’s house — that his older cousin picked him up,” Naomi said. “His father said he hadn’t returned home.”
“So I got the cousin’s number and the cousin told me that Jay’von left his house,” Naomi said. “He doesn’t know who he went with or where he went.”
Naomi said she immediately started looking for her son. “I went down the cousin’s street and found Jay’von’s jacket on the side — on the side of the road,” Naomi told Dateline. She said Jay’von’s cousin’s house was in Painter too. “Then I reported it to the county sheriff’s office.”
Dateline spoke to Lieutenant Joshua Martin of the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office. He confirmed that Jay’von was last seen in the “Painters’ Area of Accomack County” and was reported missing by his mother on April 15. Lieutenant Martin told Dateline that “several locations” had been searched since April. He added that law enforcement and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management searched a “large wooded area” in North Hampton, Virginia on Nov. 19 but found nothing. He didn’t say what prompted them to search that area.
When asked if foul play is suspected, Lt. Martin told Dateline that “all investigative avenues are open.”
“He had a strong Facebook or social media presence that he hasn’t had since that date,” Lt. Martin. “We are investigating it as the worst outcome.”
Unfortunately, so does Naomi. She told Dateline that just disappearing was very unlike her son. In fact, she said it was “not like him at all.”
Naomi said she kept asking people about her son’s disappearance and heard “so many stories”. Though Naomi didn’t know which, if any, story to believe, she said she believed one thing for sure: she believed something bad had happened to her son.
“I always hear from him several times a day. He never drops his phone,” Naomi said. But seven months later, she still hasn’t heard from Jay’von.
She told Dateline that she will not stop looking for answers. “I put up a billboard – flyers out,” Naomi said. “All we ask is that you contact the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office if anyone has any information.”
Jay’von is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 145 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He was last spotted in a white t-shirt, black jeans and black croc shoes.
Anyone with information regarding Jay’von’s disappearance is asked to contact the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office at 757-787-1131.
