No. 7 Pitt plays for the ACC Championship against Boston College

PITTSBURGH — No. 7 Pitt (26-3, 16-1 ACC) is one win away from claiming his fourth ACC championship in six seasons ahead of Saturday’s game against Boston College (19-12, 7-10 ACC ) to secure. The Panthers take on BC in the 2022 Regular Season Finals at 1:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. A win would draw Pitt level with Louisville after the Cardinals defeated Notre Dame on Wednesday to end their ACC season 17-1.

The Panthers made an impressive comeback to defeat No. 13 Georgia Tech at the Petersen Events Center on Wednesday. Valeria Vazquez Gomez, Emmy click and Rachel Fairbanks all set career records by winning as head coach Dan Fischer became the sixth coach in ACC history to have 150 conference wins (150-37).

Vazquez Gomez notched a career-best 22 kills, including five in the fifth set, to lead offense against Georgia Tech. Her offensive exploits were felt in all phases of the game as she hit a career-best three serving aces along with two blocks, resulting in a team-high 26.5 points, the most points scored by a Panther this season , and tied with Kayla Lund (9/10/22 vs. BC) for most points in a game since 2017 (Nika Markovic).

Vazquez Gomez made his presence felt throughout the court, finishing her sixth career double-double and fourth of the season with 14 digs. Courtney Buzzerio was her partner in crime on offense as the two Panthers combined for 42 kills on .343, becoming the first Panther tandem in the Dan Fischer Era to post multiple games where both get at least 20 kills.

The offensive had a season-high 71 kills thanks to 39 assists Rachel Fairbanks, the second passer/right side, has made a name for herself in all aspects of the game, racking up five kills, 39 assists, two aces, 12 digs and a career-best five blocks. She did back-to-back blocks, with Chiamaka Nwokolo, in the final two points against Georgia Tech to secure the win. Fairbanks has now recorded a top 13 doubles-doubles as a team this season.

Klika came off the bench and switched to the libero jersey after the first set to lead the back row throughout the comeback. She made a career-best 17 digs, including three in the final set. It was her fourth 10+ dig match of her career as she kept Pitt alive through the long rallies of a tumultuous fifth set.


The Eagles will play their last game of the regular season as they have their first 20-win season in three years. BC already have seven conference wins, their best total since 2019, and are on a two-game winning streak after beating Syracuse and Virginia Tech. Pitt defeated BC 3-1 at Chestnut Hill earlier this season. The Panther offense was incredibly balanced in this match, with Buzzerio (13), Dalton (12), and Vazquez Gomez (12) all scoring double-digit kills. Pitt is 36-1 all-time against BC and has won the last 18 games, the longest active winning streak over a program in Pitt’s history.
