PORTLAND, Ore. — Zach Edey had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 24 Purdue to an 80-68 win over West Virginia in Thursday night’s opening round of the Phil Knight Legacy tournament.
Mason Gillis added 14 points for the Boilermakers (4-0) and Brandon Newman came off the bench to score eight points.
Erik Stevenson scored 17 points as the Mountaineers lost (3-1) for the first time this season. Joe Toussaint added 16 points from the bench.
The Boilermakers went into halftime with a 43-32 lead. Edey led by 12 points in the first half.
“I thought he had an average game,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said of Edey. “He’s a really good player. One of the best players in the country. If you turn 24 and 12 and have an ‘average’ game, that’s pretty cool.”
The Mountaineers extended the Boilermakers’ lead with a 9-0 run late in the second half, finishing within four points before Braden Smith slammed down a 3-pointer with five minutes left to give Purdue a seven-point lead provide. That was the closest thing to West Virginia.
Stevenson scored six straight points to help West Virginia keep up early in the second half but left the game after 13 minutes with an apparent leg injury. He called back four minutes before the end.
“We were 4-0 up because we were better,” said West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins. “We still haven’t executed. We flipped the ball at a very alarming rate and refused to rebound.
Purdue passed West Virginia 34-32, shooting 47.1% from 3-point range (8 for 17).
West Virginia played solid defense and forced 18 turnovers but couldn’t get his shots to fall and went 5 to 22 (22.7%) from beyond the arc.
Purdue: The Boilermakers overcame an unranked West Virginia team to remain undefeated and advance to the PKL Semifinals.
