Virginia Basketball | Cavalier Classic Tournament at JPJ Saturday and Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.— The Virginia women’s basketball team (6-0, 1-0 ACC) hosts Saturday and Sunday, May 26-27. November, the Cavalier Classic Tournament at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Minnesota (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten), East Carolina (4-1, 0-0 American) and Liberty (2-2, 0-0 Atlantic Sun) will participate in the tournament.


Saturday, November 26, 2 p.m.: Virginia vs. Minnesota
Saturday, November 26, 5 p.m.: ECU vs. Liberty

Sunday, November 27, 2 p.m.: Virginia vs. ECU
Sunday, November 27, 5 p.m.: Minnesota vs. Liberty

  • Started as a precursor to the ACC Tournament in 1976, the official name of the Cavalier Classic Tournament has changed several times over the years, but has been held every year except 2020. This is the 36th Cavalier Classic Tournament
  • In 1976 North Carolina won the first title
  • Minnesota won the tournament title in 2003
  • Virginia won 24 of the 29 Cavalier Classic team titles
  • Since 2014, the tournament has deviated from the previous format and has no declared champion, instead playing as a true “classic” tournament with fixed pairings
  • Liberty will be the designated street team in game two each day. Every day, Virginia will be the home team in the first game of the day

Virginia notes

  • Virginia started the season 6-0 for the first time since 1997/98. The last time UVA started the season 7–0 was their 8–0 start to the 1992–93 season
  • The six straight wins is the longest winning streak for the team since eight straight wins in the 2017/18 season (December 17 – January 11).
  • Virginia clinched a 62-41 win over Campbell on Wednesday. The Cavaliers led 22-18 after a low-goal first half but exploded for 40 points after the break
  • UVA beat the Camels 21-8 in the fourth quarter. The Cavaliers are outscoring teams 136-76 in the last 10 minutes this season, averaging 10.0 points more than their final-third opponents
  • The Cavaliers average 47.2 rebounds per game, ranking fourth in the ACC. The team has averaged no more than 37 rebounds per game over the past five years and has finished in the bottom two of the ACC for each of the past three seasons
  • UVA leads the conference in offensive rebounds per game with 17.2
  • The Cavaliers are the nation’s top-20 in three rebound categories: +14.2 rebound margin (19th), 47.2 rebounds per game (15th), and 17.2 offensive rebounds per game (18th).
  • Mir McLean leads the team with an average of 6.8 rebounds per game
  • McKenna Dale had eight rebounds in the win over Campbell, her highest rebound total of her time with UVA
  • Virginia has four players averaging double figures
  • Camryn Taylor continues to lead the team with an average of 13.5 points per game. She’s hit double digits in five of six games this season and in all but four games she played last year
  • Virginia is averaging 43.6 points per game in the color this season


  • UVA guard Alexia Smith played two seasons for the Golden Gophers, appearing in 52 games from 13 starts, averaging 3.9 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. She averages 5.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game
  • UVA will face two Big Ten opponents in the next three games, taking on Penn State in the ACC/B1G Challenge on Wednesday (November 30) and Minnesota in the opening game of the Cav Classic
  • UVA graduate J’Kyra Brown is in her first season as Director of Recruiting in East Carolina. She started her playing career with ECU but switched to UVA after her freshman year and played three seasons for the Cavaliers (2015-18). She finished her career with 131 three-pointers made and tied for 10th in the UVA record book with Dawn Staley and Mikayla Venson. She totaled 950 career points during her collegiate career between ECU and Virginia, including 766 in her three seasons as a Cavalier
  • ECU head coach Kim McNeill and assistant head coach Corey McNeill spent five seasons on Joanne Boyle’s coaching staff at UVA (2011-16), with Kim being promoted to assistant head coach in 2013
  • Minnesota leads the all-time series 3-2. The last time the two teams met was a 90-68 win for the Cavaliers in Minneapolis in 2012 in an ACC/B1G Challenge game
  • East Carolina leads the all-time series 3-2. The Pirates won the last meeting of the 2020-21 season at JPJ Arena 54-51
