Virginia Margaret Buelt, 92, formerly of Waltham, died at Homestead Hospice House in Owatonna on November 16, 2022.

Virginia Margaret Buelt was born on June 10, 1930 in Carroll, IA to Henry and Anna (Schwabe) Beckman of Arcadia, IA. She attended St. John’s Elementary School and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1948. She then worked as a stenographer in Carroll until her marriage.

On October 3, 1950 she married Leonard Buelt of Halbur, IA at St. John’s Catholic Church in Arcadia. They lived in Halbur for a few months and then farmed in Audubon County for seven years. In 1958 they moved to their farm near Waltham, MN, where they lived 50 years and raised five children. In 2008 they moved to Austin, MN and later in 2017 to Prairie Meadows in Kasson, MN.

Virginia was a part-time employee of the US Postal Service before becoming Waltham’s postmaster in 1981. She worked there until her retirement in 1990. Virginia was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hayfield, MN, where she was an active member of the Sacred Heart Council of Catholic Women. She served as sexton, Eucharist, taught religion, and sang in the choir.

Virginia was a warm, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially during the holidays and on special occasions. Virginia was an avid reader and enjoyed concerts, theatre, writing, crosswords, history, travel and her flowers. She made photo albums and scrapbooks for each of her children and enjoyed keeping a daily ledger. For several years she was a historian for the local chapter of American exchange students. The family hosted a student from Germany in the 1978/79 school year. Virginia and Leonard enjoyed three trips to Europe while their son Steven was stationed in the Army and able to visit their former exchange student.

Virginia is survived by her five children: Kristin Johnson (Bob Peterson) of Minnetrista, MN, Jeanne Eull of Dundas, MN, Steven Buelt (Tiffanie) of Stafford, VA, Karen Buelt (Ken Shokes) of Rochester, MN, and Melissa Gebhardt (Dave). from Shoreview, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren: Tyler Johnson (Christiane), Trent Johnson, Lisa Derby Olejar (Mark Olejar), Erin Stokich (Christopher), Michael Derby (Natalie), Maria Derby (Shawn Davis), Matt Eull (Becca), Robert Aaron Buelt (Rebecca ), Hannah Fairchild (Devon), Shelby Smith (Toby), Bethany Benson (Zac), Davin Shokes (Lora Strey), Alex Gebhardt and Thomas Gebhardt; and 17 great-grandchildren; her sisters Phyllis Wernimont and Verna Tunning (Leonard), and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded by her husband Leonard Buelt, sons-in-law Les Johnson and Mike Eull, her parents, brother Ray Beckman, sisters Lucille Buelt and Eunice Starman, and many sisters-in-law.

The visit will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home at 501 2nd Street NW in Hayfield. Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 2nd Street NE in Hayfield where Father William Becker will celebrate. Burial will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield.
